Follow Your Passion Or Pursue The Money
One prevalent conflict that dictates our patterns and behaviours is “should I follow my passion or pursue the profits?”
The grounding for this question represents one of the biggest social memes that we have in society and is especially the case in today’s western society.
The quick response is to follow your passion and the cash will follow on with the only caveat being that your passion is something that people are actually willing to spend their money on.
However, it is worth going deeper to evaluate why this question arises in our thinking and what impact asking this question has on our minds. The first affect asking this question has is it places a boundary on our thinking because the question forces you to think in a dichotomous way. The key word in the question is “or” as the word “or” forces you to make a choice between one thing or another with the question suggesting that there isn’t even a chance of “and” which of courses closes off the mind to that chance entirely.
A question that serves to give you an answer that will help you to move forward is “How can my passion provide value to an audience of similarly passionate buyers?” You may choose to start by jotting this question at the top of your journal and noting down all possible answers. Perhaps you could use mind mapping software with the question in the middle of the mind map.
I think passion is born from your purpose. If you can work towards something for hours on end and the only reward is itself, then you’ll feel as if you’re in flow. If you haven’t read ‘Flow’ which is a book by the Hungarian psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, then I’d encourage you to read it. The book informs us that we are constantly in a state of either flow or ebb in our lives. When we are in flow, time seems to pass swiftly and when we’re in ebb time passes very steadily. When you’re doing an activity you’re really passionate about, then it doesn’t feel like effort at all. You would most probably do it even if you weren’t being rewarded financially.
Persistence is something that comes totally naturally if you’re enthusiastic about what you’re doing with an all consuming obsession and a burning desire. Persistence often sounds like inordinate effort for the majority of people, however it’s only really discipline in action. Discipline is easy when it originates from passion and is most definitely a characteristic you should embrace.
It’s so important to find out within yourself what you’re passionate about. This is often where you invest your time, energy and thoughts. It doesn’t feel like a “waste” of time when you’re doing it. follow your passion and allow the profits to follow on.
