How Page Rank Influences Website Promotion

Under Internet Marketing

Google uses a special algorithm to determine the rank of each site within the worldwide web. Thus, each site has its own page rank that reflects its ‘popularity’ among the rest of the webpages. Page rank (PR) is a very important factor for both webmasters and Internet users. Webmasters know that PR determines the place of the site on the search results list. For regular Internet users PR improves the search quality.

The page rank algorithm is basically a special algorithm invented by Stanford University and used by Google to analyze the links. It calculates the total amount and quality of incoming and outgoing links. Based on this analysis Google attributes a certain PR to each website.

When there is a link on one webpage to the other webpage, the hosting webpage distributes part of its own PR to that other page. The distributed part is what the PR algorithm actually calculates. The PR distribution does not affect the actual PR of the webpage that has outgoing links on it. If the site is new and it is already indexed by Google it will definitely have the minimum PR which won’t be taken away by the outgoing links. Thus, here is how the mechanism works: Google takes the PR of the site and divides it by the total amount of outbound links; then each link carries the divided value to their sites. The lower the PR of the site the less value it gives to the other sites it is linked to.

Webmasters are usually not satisfied with low PR. Hence, they apply special techniques to improve it. Taking into consideration the above mentioned information we can assume that one of the ways to increase PR is to get incoming links. This is the way to get portion of the source page PR distributed to your own webpage. It’s clear that incoming links from sites with high PR are more beneficial and distribute more ‘power’ to your page than links from low PR pages. It’s also better for your page when the source page has a limited number of outgoing links. You will get more value from the site if it has, let’s say, 5 outgoing links than when it has 50 of them. Thus, you need to get incoming links from content relevant, quality sites with high page rank. A couple of links from such sites are more beneficial than a number of backlinks to some doubtful websites or free web directories.

If you are doing everything right but one day you notice a drop in page rank, do not panic. It often happens that PR drop doesn’t affect the SERP position. PR is an important factor but not the only one that affects the top search list position. Thus, the advice is: do everything right, do not resort to spamming techniques and a good PR will eventually come automatically.
