SEO For MSN And Google

Under SEO

This article focuses on some of the variations between search engine optimisation for the Google and MSN. However I’ve got included some results from Yahoo as a comparison.

As the bulk of my purchasers have Australian businesses, my testing results are based mostly on google.com.au, yahoo.com.au and msn.com.au, with “results only from Australia” selected.

I recently took on a client whose web site was designed entirely in Macromedia Flash. Search Engines have very little or no ability to browse Flash* therefore this website may not be found anywhere in Google. But, on the basis of the keyword, “Make Up”-while not the “”-their web site was ranked at no.3 out of 188,984,290 results. The only place on the web site where any keywords may be scan by the search engines was the Meta tags.

This example shows a very clear distinction between how an enquiry engines like Google and MSN rank sites among their listings. I decided to run some very specific tests to seek out the differences between the Big3 search engines, and the way simple or troublesome it’s to rank well inside them.

Note: While there are various completely different components that build up a successful search engine optimisation campaign, completely different SEO mixtures are needed for different sites, furthermore totally different search engines. You can’t always rely on exactly the same SEO mix.

While this instance could be nice for a website engineered entirely at intervals Flash, it will, but, leave room for search results at intervals MSN to come back results that are considerably less accurate then Google i.e. the tags could be filled with keywords that don’t accurately reflect the web site theme.

While Google places some importance on the header and outline tags of a web site, it places additional importance on the content of a website. i.e. if your content will not support the keywords you have placed in your Meta tags, it’s unlikely you’ll see results from your Meta Tags unless your website has no real competition.

There are other vital aspects moreover, like link popularity, but these other elements aren’t the focus of this article.

Example 1 – Flash designed Website My client’s web site had completely no optimisation work done other than place data inside the title, description and keyword tags, and solely on the home page.

The header and title tag mentions “make up” once and “create-up” is mentioned three times. In MSN search, “make up” ranks 3 out of 188,984,290 results, “build-up” ranks three out of twenty six,586,615 results.

When looking out the first 100 results in Google, this web site was nowhere located beneath either key phrase. My additional tests proved that ranking well in MSN with this methodology is not just specific to the current example.

Example two – Comparisons between Google, MSN and Yahoo For more testing I used a completely different and additional competitive trade-finance. During this case I used a web site that was already well optimised. I centered on a commonly misspelled keyphrase- “buisness loans” and began by adding this phrase once into the header tag.

When I started this test, the following total search results for every keyphrase were: – Google – 534 – MSN – 295 – Yahoo – 395

6th Could 2006 – Added these keywords. On this date my consumer’s web site failed to seem under the key phrase, “buisness loans”, nor did it seem in the first 100 results in either MSN or Google. The key phrase above is a commonly misspelt phrase for Business Loans. The correct phrase currently ranks at position 3 in MSN Search.

13th Might 2006 – This keyphrase appeared at position 1 in MSN, but no ends up in Google’s top 100.

19th May 2006 – A further half-dozen days later no results for this keyphrase had appeared in Google, therefore taking the test one step any, I added this keyphrase to the description tag.

twenty sixth Might 2006 – With still no results showing in Google, I placed this keyphrase into the anchor text of one of the links towards the lower part of the page content.

twenty sixth May 2006 – This keyphrase appeared in Yahoo search results at No.1.

26th Might 2006 – This keyphrase also seems in Google’s search results at Position 6.

During this period of testing, all search engines crawled the site each day, so all changes I created would have been noticed by them during the crawl.

While my testing confirmed some fascinating results, what it most importantly highlights is the need to check totally different ways with totally different keywords at intervals the main search engines of your focus to attain a successful search engine optimisation campaign.

* A lot of recent versions of Flash have settings that enable you to change the format of the text among Flash to render it HTML and permit the search engines to scan it, but it still will not enable you to work with the text in an SEO friendly way.
