When it comes to building our list of followers on Twitter, there are a number of shortcuts we can take. One of those is the use of automated systems that find followers for us. But, not only is Twitter cracking down on automated systems, I would also question the quality and value of a list of followers built in this way on autopilot.
Twitter is among the top 15 traffic sites in the world, so its power should not be underestimated, and finding followers and people you want to follow is important in harnessing that power and using it to your advantage. But why not grow your follower list organically, albeit more slowly, and develop a following of quality people, rather than creating a list of randomly selected followers who have little to offer, or are not even active on Twitter most of the time, just to make up the numbers? In reality, about 30% of people you follow will follow you back, so don’t be afraid to unfollow someone if they have not responded and followed you back after about seven days. Unless of course it is someone your REALLY want to follow, such as a celebrity or guru you love. But it’s important not to allow your follower/followed numbers to get too far out of sync…..about 10% is ok, but remember, the ultimate goal is for your follower number to be higher than the number you follow.

1. Go to http://www.twellow.com and sign up for a free account: This is the Yellow Pages of Twitter, with over 22 million Twitter profiles listed. The site allows you to search for people by name, keywords, category or places among other things. You can also add yourself to certain keywords/categories so that you can be found by others. And it’s a great place to manage your followers.
Search for people you admire in your niche and check out their list of followers to find people you might want to follow. So if you were interested in fashion, you might search for ‘Emporio Armani’ and check out their list of followers. Every single person on Emporio Armani’s list will have an interest in fashion.
You can also go to the ‘All Categories’ tab and select a particular category, or even sub-category and it will bring up a list of people for that category. All searches are ordered by ‘number of followers’, so it’s easy to find the most popular people.
Go to http://search.twitter.com and enter a subject you are interested in. This site will bring up the latest tweets about that subject or keyword. The beauty of this site is that you can find people to connect with who are active on Twitter….right now…and talking about YOUR subject matter! Hover your mouse over their name to check out their bio and follow if you choose to. And if you click on the @name you can send a personal message there and then. Everyone checks their personal messages and as they are online, chances are they will check out your follow request straight away and you will be able to have a real time, live conversation with them if they like what they see. How powerful is that!
A Final Word Of Caution
Don’t go out there too aggressively following and unfollowing hundreds of people. Twitter won’t like it! But you should be able to safely follow up to 100 new people a day without drawing attention to yourself in Twitterland. On one condition though: Keep an eye on your followed/follower ratio. Remember the general rule of thumb to keep your followed number no more than 10% above your follower number.
