White space in your website: Nothing to be afraid of! Some web designers believe that white space is bad. That’s the main reason for the over-whelming numbers of sites with too many photos and wild colors. You can easily create a professional image with white space, plus it has a clean, uncluttered look to it. More importantly, it helps to relax the eye and allow it to focus on what is most important. Your site will have a purpose, and all the images/colors compete for the attention of your readers which may be counter to your desires.
Be creative with fonts, but don’t go crazy with them. Many people building their first website are tempted to use a large number of fonts. Remember that websites with many different fonts are harder for visitors to read, as they have to keep readjusting their eyes to the different styles. While using one or two fonts can be good for decoration, any more than that screams “amateur!” Whatever fonts you do choose, make sure that they are easy on the eyes of visitors. Complicated or fancy fonts may look artistic, but they will not serve you well. If the purpose of your site is to sell products or services, people have to be able to easily read it. It’s fun to be artistic and creative, but for a commercial site, simplicity and readability are paramount.
Keep aware and always make sure you’re maintaining a reasonable percentage of both informational copy and sales copy. You never want to have overkill with sales copy. It’s pretty simple because if you hammer them with sales copy, then they’ll just go away and abandon your site forever. A good ratio is seventy five percent editorializing and entertaining content to twenty five percent sales text. It’s difficult, if not impossible, for your reader to trust you if there’s too much selling copy. You want the reader to keep reading all the way to the end of the page where they will find a way to buy your product. Your site serves to pre-sell your reader, so you don’t want to alienate them with too much sales copy.
